Effects of photography

As a photographer, the goal can be to create an effect in your audience when they see your image. Sometimes this effect can be small, such as simple appreciation, but at other times the intended effect is much larger.

In these last days of Christmas my eye was drawn to a video posted on Vimeo called “Spoil“, about a part of British Columbia (Canada) that is under threat by the possible arrival of huge oil tankers. This piece of land is still almost untouched by western civilization, and the boreal forests still are an intact habitat for numerous animals.

The documentary video follows the work of several photographers that are capturing the magic of the place, and the intended effect of their work to stop the company Enbridge of making the region’s waterways becoming a route for oil tankers. This is a very noble effort and with the help of National Geographic they have reached quite an audience throughout the world that are now aware of this particular problem.

I do hope that these large oil tankers never will arrive there, and to have to privilege to visit the region one day as this video did inspire me to view and document the beauty of British Columbia myself.
