While it didn’t really come as a surprise, this weekend the ice in NL was really good for skating. Although I had no plans of going skating, I received a text message from my sister last Friday with the invitation to come over and bring ice skates. With nothing but the ‘Fiets- en wandelbeurs’ (i.e. Bike and hike fair) in my calendar, I soon decided that it was way more fun to be on the ice than in a packed fair getting inspiration for a next vacation, can get inspiration from other sources. OK, it was a shame that I’d then have to miss some presentations and expositions of a few befriended photographers. Better luck next time, yet it was also more than 10 years ago that the ice was actually thick enough on the rivers in Fryslan (province of NL) for skating.
My mind was made up pretty quick, and decided that it would be worth the hour-and-a-half travel to my sis’ place. In the morning it was getting used to being on the ice again, however we ate up the miles and were in Berlikum in no time at all (distance of about 10km from Franeker). After getting back at the start again and a spot of coffee and lunch, my parents were also invited. They showed up pretty quickly and soon we were all on the ice, for another 20+km lap.
