Couple nights ago the moon was set full on the sky, and almost no clouds in sight. With those observations in my head I packed a minimal photo kit (DSLR, wide-angle lens, remote control and a tripod) and headed outside with the intention to shoot the city of Deventer. Almost forgot my North Face eTip gloves, that I had stuffed on another coat earlier this week.
As I did want to shoot the city of Deventer I had to get across the IJssel, and find a perch on the west-bank. My idea was to get close to one of the bridges over the river, as this offers a great perspective over the city itself. Unfortunately my idea of finding a spot high up (same level as the bridge) did not work, could not find a good spot. I knew a spot down on river level, that would allow for a panoramic view of the city, which did actually work out well.
One thing that caused a bit of struggle to get the exposure right was the amount of light that is aimed at the church in the center of Deventer. After the first few exposures I realized that the church was way overexposed, while the rest of the city remained still a bit dark (the mood I was after). After tweaking my exposure with two full stops of under-exposure, I finally got it right looking at the histogram.
After a while ended up near the foot-ferry from De Worp to the center of Deventer, where I apparently was not the only person that found the full moon and Deventer a good combination to capture on a sensor.
My experiments with getting a ferry moving over the IJssel in one single exposure did not work out, the ferry itself does not have enough lights of its own to be clearly visible. Nevertheless, in my opinion it was a good night out to capture Deventer and I know that I will be heading out there more often for a few long exposures in daytime.
