You’re invited to HackerX, an invite-only recruiting event for developers. It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet with and learn from some of the world’s most innovative and fastest growing companies in a casual environment.
A few weeks ago I received the above invitation via email for an Hacker X event in Madrid. I decided to take a small leap of faith and participate. Without knowing what it actually was about, it would only cost me time.
Although it stated recruiting event in the email, I hadn’t expected the event to be that much driven towards acquiring talent for the companies that were present. Yet, there was also still a lot of room to simply connect to fellow programmers who also received the invitation. Most of people I spoke were there for the same reason as me, curiosity for the event. Most of them were happy in their current jobs, yet were keen to get to know what skills or languages are applied in the companies present. I’ve also seen developers bringing loads of printed CVs with them and showing them at each table, really looking for another job.
In the end it was a positive experience, and noticed that my skills and work experience are also valued in other companies, besides getting to know other companies and developers. It wasn’t really the networking event I was hoping for, other events such as Meetups or conferences are more suited for that. If you are looking for another job at an innovative company, you could look at those Hacker X events in the future.
